Separation Anxiety
mixed media, 12”x9” (framed)
Separation Anxiety explores Diana Chen’s personal anxiety about the shifted dynamics of adult friendships, especially surrounding the choice of having kids or remaining childfree. As she worries about growing apart with friends who are entering parenthood, she also learns that many new parents might experience similar losses. In many Asian societies, the expectation of upholding being a “good parent” is particularly heavy on the mother. While a mother’s sacrifice to fulfill the child’s needs and success is greatly praised, acknowledging the mom’s personal social needs is also essential, but often overlooked. In Separation Anxiety, Diana Chen seeks to embrace changes while remaining hopeful for healing, restoring, as well as maintaining friendships and connection as people grow into diverse choices of adulthood.
